How to Inspect Roof Flashing

How to Inspect Roof Flashing

Jan 28, 2021

Is your roof leaking? Are you having a difficult time pinpointing the cause? Is it possible you’re overlooking a simple repair?

While not always the cause of a leaking roof, old or damaged flashing could be the culprit.

With flashing typically located in several areas of your roof, don’t rush the inspection process. Instead, take your time as you move from one area to the next.

Here are some tips that can help:

•    Flashing is generally used along the walls, at the base of chimneys, and around plumbing vents

•    Check for any signs of damage, such as bent flashing, holes, or caulking that has cracked and dried up

•    Make sure the flashing is securely fastened, as it’s a primary defense against water getting into your home

If you already have a leak, you may have some idea of where to look for the problem. But even if you don’t have a leak, it’s good practice to regularly inspect your roof’s flashing. This can help you eliminate problems before they start.

Final tip: if you don’t know what you’re looking at and/or are uncomfortable walking on your roof, contact a qualified contractor to assist you.
