Common Types of Damage From a Roof Leak

Jun 25, 2021

A roof leak is every bit as serious as it sounds. Even if you take immediate action to remedy the problem, it can still result in quite a bit of damage.

While there’s no way of knowing exactly what will happen if your roof begins to leak, here are some types of damage you can expect:

•    Structural damage: For example, the wood under your shingles will begin to rot. Over time, this can result in structural damage, wood rot, and mold.

•    Damaged ceilings: Should water make its way into your home, it’s likely that your ceiling will suffer some type of damage. The first sign of water damage is staining and discoloration. You may also begin to notice mildew or mold.

•    Insulation damage: A common example is water that makes its way into your attic. When insulation gets damp, there’s a greater chance that it’ll eventually become covered in black mold. On top of this, water reduces the effectiveness of insulation, which will impact your heating and cooling bills.

If you have any reason to suspect a roof leak, don’t wait to take action. Should you repair it quickly, there’s a greater chance you’ll escape without damage.
